Pay to Play controversy - Posted Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 - 4:24PM

I read an article recently on myspace which highlights the issue of how bands get to play gigs at UK venues.  The issue under discussion was "pay to play". Various examples were given of bands who have to buy tickets from a venue. The band then has the responsibility of selling those tickets in order to make money to cover their costs.  In many cases the band fails to do this and they loose money.

In my experience many bands never get paid for the gigs they play. Running a band costs money and a lot of bands are loosing money instead of covering their costs.

I look at this issue from both sides.  As a gig promoter I have lost a lot of money putting on gigs. This money comes out of my pocket. Overall I have made a loss on all the gigs I have run.  On one occasion I agree with a band to pay them £150 to play at one of my gigs. I thought they would pull enough ticket sales to cover this but they didnt.  But I still had to pay their fee out of my own pocket. At that time I was very hard up and this was a painful experience.

I have been to many gigs (at local venues) where bands have played but brought either no fans with them or very few and certainly not sold enough tickets (via their fans) to cover the cost of them playing.

These are not bad bands. There are many good bands around who have few fans - mainly because they havent organised their fan base to up at their gigs.

Bands love playing; bands want to share their music. But in many cases they are not covering the costs of doing this.

I agree that bands should not pay to play.  As a promoter I will now only hire bands who will guarantee to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of them being there. I dont expect to make money from putting on gigs.  But I cannot afford to make a loss. My costs are rarely in excess of 10%. The bulk of the ticket sales goes to the bands who costs are usually higher than mine.

If you have comments on this issue, please post them - i think its a fundamental issue for the whole music industry.
