well,
the first thing to do is determine what the source of the noise is. I know this is probably a no brainer. Is the noise coming from your guitar amp? mic pre? sound card? flourescent (spelling?) light? bad grounding of your power?
do your best to isolate the noise, then you can start figuring out how to get rid of it. a little more info as to what you are recording and through what equipment may help others who are reading help out.

Make sure you use grounded outlets on everything you plug in. That tends to be most of what I find in my recordings. If you don't have any 3 prong outlets, replace them. They are cheap as crap and easy to install. MAKE SURE YOU KILL THE POWER BEFORE YOU DO THIS! IF you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself get somebody who know what they are doing or hire a professional.

Also any thing that creates "white noise" like fans or flourecent lights have a buzz that can actually transfer thru the cables them selves or be picked up on the mic.

Having good cables will help reduce this, but the best way is to just eliminate the sourse. It may be hot with out the fan or dark with our the lights, but it will work.

First is the hum on every track or just on one instruments track?

If it is showing up on every track then
the 60hz hum from your power outlets may be the culprit.
Use a power conditioner and a hum eliminator (ebtech makes a fairly decent and cheap one)

If you are using long cables to having them coiled can create hum.

If it turns out the noise is in just one track or instrument.
First check if the sources is mismatched levels on the instrument or mic channel. (trying to run +4db pro gear into -10db consumer audio gear things like that)
Guitar pickups not being properly grounded can be another source.
Pre amp effects also can add a lot of noise to the signal path.

If it's none of that, then it just may be ambient room noise which can be eliminated by using a rack mount compressor with an expander/gate function (which will allow you to close the circuit and cut off residual room noise as well as some fx noise way better then a simple stomp box noise gate because you can control the speed at which the gate opens and closes upon detecting the cut off db level).
