I just finished the book “Faking It: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music” and feel it’s important to keep current on the business side of the industry as well as the creative side. Taking classes or reading books are one way to stay informed. This month we ask what you do to keep up with the latest info on the music biz. If you have a book, website or class that you’d like to recommend, we would love to hear your comments.

I will be releasing my first e-book this month called "How to Get Band Sponsorships and Endorsements." It includes the methods I used to get my band sponsored and endorsed and I wrote it because I couldn't find any valid information out there on how to go about this. What little information is available is vague and wasn't helpful in the least. I'm also doing consulting on the subject for bands who are scratching their heads wondering how to get their foot in the door.

I'm reading "faking it" now and am really impressed with it so far. The chapter "Nobody's Dirty Business" I think really helps to explain the origins of popular music in America, and how the emergence of record companies influenced that in both positive and negative ways. Another book I'm reading is called "in the country of country, people and places in american music" which also tells the story of American roots music origins by interviews with survivors who played important roles early on.
