Jody Espina of JodyJazz designed his first mouthpiece with three goals in mind. The mouthpiece now known as the Classic must be versatile with plenty of power, produce a focused sound, and project like a metal mouthpiece at a much lower cost. To achieve the first goal the Classic uses a patented removable, hand-finished baffle, called a spoiler, which makes the mouthpiece louder and brighter when in use. The spoiler allows the mouthpiece to act like two mouthpieces in one. When inserted it is great for a variety of music from jazz to top 40 and salsa to hip-hop. When the spoiler is removed the mouthpiece is perfect for classical music in both large and small ensembles. To focus the sound and make it more controllable a medium-large round chamber is used. Finally, to make a mouthpiece with the projection of metal and price of rubber, a polycarbonate and synthetic rubber mix is precision injected into a mold to form the general shape. The mouthpiece is then hand finished and play tested to insure the reed seals properly and mouthpiece performs as expected.
